PA PAST PLAYERS
Basil Biggs
1819 – 1906
Gettysburg, PA
Basil Biggs was born in Maryland, but moved to
Gettysburg shortly before the start of the war. He allegedly used his home as a stop on the Underground Railroad.
Biggs’ farm was part of the land that formed the Gettysburg Battlefield, and his family fled the property on the first day of the battle. Upon returning, Biggs found his land in ruins. He received a contract to exhume bodies from surrounding communities and rebury them in the National Cemetery. Biggs had reburied over 1,000 bodies.
